These letters came from the same Christian community that produced the Gospel of John but from its next generation.
Therefore, it should be studied after the Gospel of John workbook.
Its goals are to:
- Discover some of the internal issues that challenged the “Johannine community.”
- Feel the concern of the author who loves his community and doesn’t want the members to be led astray by what he views as false teaching.
- Become aware of the importance in the Johannine community of the teaching that Jesus had come in the flesh and was the Son of God.
- Deepen our understanding of the command to love one another and what it means to the community that “God is love”. Strengthen our commitment to wrestle with various issues in our churches and still “love one another.”
