Lady Gaga and a New Kind of Christianity
Thank you for joining us in an exploration of fresh views on Christianity. I thought the following a relevant witness of a type of new Christian witness such as is suggested by our 2017 BSL book group authors Brian McLaren and Glennon Doyle Melton. Please don’t take this post as an invitation to debate Lady Gaga. Rather I would invite reflection on the authenticity of her effort to follow Jesus in many of the ways Jesus cared about most and that frankly Christian religious cultures have not always prioritized. She is, for instance, an impressive philanthropist for a 30 year old, and one who stakes herself to prayer, family, and faith community as well as the welfare of others. She has self-identified as a Christian for many years with peers and audiences with whom her doing so may have come at a price.
As our spiritual life book groups this winter are discovering, there are many voices suggesting that there are new ways to embrace being a Christian. These ways are sometimes in contradiction of old ways. For instance, even long time Christian leaders are speaking about how doubt and questioning work in our spiritual life…something Lady Gaga also talks about. BSL is talking about it as well…and it will be a focus in the in-person programs we are working to fund and organize for next winter with Barry Huff. To grow ourselves, and to reach new audiences and sustain our spiritual communities, may require hitting the refresh button, emptying our caches, and listening to Jesus in his own words…all of them, not just the ones with which we are most familiar. Whole new portions of the Bible, large portions, may appear to reflect more of the inspired Word than we had previously thought.
